Nestled in the heart of County Wicklow in Ireland is Beyond the Trees Avondale. A unique experience that offers visitors a perfect blend of nature, history, and adventure. This beautiful forest park is home to one of the most incredible treetop walks. With historical landmarks, and scenic hiking trails which make it a must visit for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and families. The History of Avondale…
Avondale’s history is deeply rooted in both Irish political heritage and the development of forestry in Ireland. Originally established in the 18th century. The estate is most famously known as the birthplace and home of Charles Stewart Parnell. One of Ireland’s most significant political leaders. The Avondale Estate itself dates back to 1777 when it was first built by Samuel Hayes. Samuel was a barrister and politician with a deep interest in forestry. Hayes planted many of the trees that still stand on the estate today and was one of the pioneers of scientific forestry in Ireland. After his death, the estate changed hands and eventually became the Parnell family home. It was then inherited by Charles Stewart Parnell’s mother.
In addition to its political significance, Avondale is also considered the birthplace of Irish forestry. Under the stewardship of Hayes and later generations, the estate became the site of Ireland’s first systematic forest plantations. In 1904, after the death of Parnell’s sister, the estate was purchased by the Irish government. Then becoming a forestry training center, helping to establish modern forestry techniques in the country.
Today, Beyond the Trees Avondale Avondale is one of the top tourist attractions in Ireland. It only recently opened up what would be there most popular experience on site, The Beyond The Trees Avondale experience. Opened in July 2022, this 38 metre viewing tower gives you some of the most incredible views of the Wicklow country side. With the most popular part being of course one of the largest slides in Europe.
The estate also has some incredible hiking trails. Bringing you through some beautiful ancient forest trails and along the Avondale river. In its present form, Avondale continues to honour its rich legacy while embracing modern sustainability and conservation efforts.

Beyond the Trees Avondale offers a variety of hiking trails that varies in difficulty. These trails brings you through the park’s expansive woodland. Offering breathtaking views of County Wicklow’s landscapes, from ancient trees to scenic rivers.
The Great Ride Walk
One of the most popular trails in the park is the Great Ride Walk. This walk follows a 2.5 km loop through Avondale’s historic forest. The trail is relatively flat and suitable for walkers of all abilities. Making it an ideal choice for families and casual hikers. Along the path, you’ll encounter towering sequoias, mighty oaks, and other tree species. Many of which have been part of Avondale’s landscape for centuries. This trail is a great introduction to the natural beauty of the park, especially in spring and autumn when the foliage bursts into life.
River Walk
For those looking for a slightly more challenging hike, the River Walk is a great option. This 3.5 km trail takes you deeper into the woodland, following the Avonmore River as it winds through the forest. Personally this is one of my favourite walks on the estate as it offers some of the most beautiful views, for wildlife enthusiasts this is also a great trail to spot a range of wildlife from squirrels, deer and a lots of bird species.
The Fern Walk
If you’re interested in a shorter but still a beautiful walk, the Fern Walk offers a 1.2 km stroll through dense, fern-filled undergrowth. This trail is especially popular during the summer months, as you walk under the forest canopy.
Beyond The Trees: Tree Top Walk
One of the most exciting and popular attractions at Beyond the Trees Avondale is the Treetop Walk, a 1.2 km long elevated boardwalk that winds through the forest canopy, offering visitors a bird’s-eye view of the landscape. This incredible structure allows you to experience the beauty of the trees from an entirely new perspective, as you rise up to 38 meters above the ground at its highest point.
As you walk along the boardwalk, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Wicklow Mountains, the Avonmore River, and the incredible forest below. Interpretive panels are scattered throughout the walk, providing information about the local wildlife, the history of the forest, and the significance of the various trees you’ll encounter along the way.

By Train: Rathdrum is also accessible by train from Dublin. Trains run regularly from Connolly Station to Rathdrum, and the journey takes about an hour. From the station, it’s a short taxi ride to the estate, or you can enjoy a scenic 20-minute walk to the entrance.
